Welcome to PinkLockerMom, a blog for moms who are raising tween girls. I'm the kids' editor at KidsHealth.org and the author of The Pink Locker Society, a novel for girls. I wrote the book in response to the thousands of emails I've received from girls. They are beyond-beyond grateful that KidsHealth.org has info on puberty. And we don't just have Puberty 101, we have "Breasts and Bras," "Crushes," and "Getting Your Period at School."
Their emails brim with energy and intelligence and they ask pointed questions. How important are the subjects of periods, bras, and boys? About 11,000 girls answered a recent KidsHealth.org survey on puberty. (More about that later.) Being invited into this conversation with so many tween girls feels like a privilege. I wish I could lead each one to the answers she needs. The next best thing seems to be writing helpful books and online content. But they need more than just a kindly aunt on the Internet. They need their moms.
In this blog, I'll share what I know about tween girls and mix in some ideas and insights from others. (I'll also be giving away free copies of The Pink Locker Society.) Parenting is personal and there's no one-size-fits-all advice, especially when it comes to raising a daughter who's growing up. But I hope to help you find that sweet spot in your own parenting - somewhere between taking caring of everything and letting her figure it out on her own.
